Weekend Round Up: New Releases From Cheap Cuts, The Front Bottoms and More
Miss us? We’re back with a brand new season of Rhapsody in Reverie for you! And in addition to gracing the podcasting airwaves again, we couldn’t resist sharing a few of the new songs that came out this past weekend that we couldn’t get enough of! Read on below to hear some of co-host Katarina’s favorites of the moment!
“Check Your Phone (FT. Pete Wentz)” BY Cheap Cuts
Though this song is almost more spoken word poetry over a fun surf rock remix, I can’t stop listening to it. It’s very much an ode to the digital age, where we check our phones almost constantly because we’re either bored, or because we’re consumed by social media. Perhaps it’s an ode to all the things we do to numb ourselves so the harsh realities of life don’t overwhelm us, which is almost funny considering how easy-going and fun this song sounds. The banalities of life are plentiful and constant, and this song is both a criticism and an ode to all of it and more. And you can dance to it until the sadness leaves you, so it’s got that going for it too!
“Tigers And Young Men” BY Will Chase & Ingrid Michaelson
I can’t believe that I’m typing this, but yes, someone has finally given us a musical “Tiger King” parody. I suppose it was inevitable, seeing as how the docuseries has run wild in the public’s imagination, but I still didn’t expect it. Of all people, I did not expect this song to come from Will Chase and Ingrid Michaelson, but here we are, in a clown world where songs like this can exist. Actually this song is pretty funny, taking jabs at Joe Exotic’s penchant for, well, Young Men and Tigers, (who he also prefers young). The fact that the song is insanely repetitive is almost the perfect parody of Joe Exotic’s absolutely balls-to-the-walls crazy songwriting, and Broadway star Will Chase does an absolutely incredible job as ‘Joe Exotic,’ and Ingrid Michaelson did a fantastic job writing this/portraying Carole Baskin. I hate this song. But I also found it very funny because I’m still not quite dead inside. And hey, it’s for charity.

“everyone blooms” BY The Front Bottoms
As one of the many people who felt as if they were on the cusp of finally getting their lives together before being struck by the new c-word, this song strikes a chord. It’s about how people all ‘bloom’ in their own time, and that some people are ahead while others are behind, and just how daunting real life still seems. The song is a wonderful and cathartic experience, and I’ve been blasting it through my speakers all weekend. As usual, I’m blown away by The Front Bottoms’ incredible lyricism, and let me just say that this song was so perfectly timed in its release that I consider it a blessing from the universe.
